Another Non-Event Budget

If I had to write a performance review of Jim Chalmers, it would probably include something like, “nice chap, intelligent and plays well with others, but no impact.”

And so, probably to plan, today’s Federal Budget was a non-event, except for the announcement of small tax cuts in 2026 and 2027. What about reform? Nothing, except that non-compete clauses for workers paid up to $175,000 would be banned! Absolutely no hint of bravery anywhere.

It could be because of the forthcoming election, because “small target” politics is the go to, or because of Trump… but if the last two years is anything to go by, there just isn’t the stomach for “risky” reform and nor do modern politicians have the ability to sell the need.

The real risk is in fact the lack of reform – in tax, super, migration, productivity, defence … basically everywhere. Meanwhile, debt is too high and not being addressed, and the NDIS remains a programme which we cannot afford in anything like it’s current form, but apparently remains untouchable to our politicians.

And what is the alternative if the LNP should gain power – Angus Taylor as the Treasurer, an inveterate climate change denier regularly voted the worst performing minister in Morrison’s Government … so, no relief in sight!
